Project 365+1 :: Day 44 :: “Rawr”

Ya know, I am still scared of people inside dragon-like costumes.  When I was little, I was TERRIFIED of the Chinese dragons.  Guess what?  I am STILL scared of these things.

Project 365+1 :: Day 28 :: “Shishi”

Last week, the school that I substitute teach in had a visiting artist, Mr. Jorge.  He works with clay in different ways, on a wheel and with his hands.  This shishi below was created just with his hands.  In Japan, shishi are lions (not dogs like I thought) which are said to protect people from evil spirits.  They are usually in a pair, male and female.  One has an open mouth, to suck in the evil spirits; the other’s mouth is closed to stop them from coming in.  There’s a lot of history and legend surrounding them.  You can check out this wikipedia article, though, as it’s been pounded in my head, do not rely on it word for word.  Anyone can go in and edit the article, so it’s to be taken as a grain of salt.

Anyhoo, during the week I got to see many different types of clay sculptures and even make some myself!  Check in later days to see an example of things I’ve made, then come back in April to see my finished products!  🙂
